The ‘light of the world’ earrings draws from the curiosity of strong iconic women across time and space.The history of fierce Mughal and Rajput women has always been an inspiration to us. These empresses were equal to men in love, life, business and battle just as we are today. Nur Jahan, the most powerful woman in 17th century India was a remarkable leader in a male-dominated world. These strong traits are translated in this design: strong distinctive ruby, a symbol of her passion, boldness and unconquerable flame burning within her to be the “light of the world.” The light that helped her rule the empire alongside her husband, dispensed justice and mastermind daring rescues.

DESIGN

Often associated with passion the glowing color of rubies was the perfect choice to represent Nur Jahan’s passion for everything she did whether it was ruling an empire, conducting trade or revolutionizing the fashion era. She juggled so beautifully between being a dutiful mother, loving wife and a fierce ruler; a truly independent woman. The careful faceting of the ruby mirrors the multiple facets to Nur Jahan’s personality. A personality that truly brought light to the world. The traditionally round diamonds are adorned with strength and power to pay homage to this remarkable queen.

INSPIRATION

Nur Jahan always said “A woman is not only always an ingredient, but commonly a principal drug of most virtue,” and she meant it. Not only was she fearless on the battlefield but she was also a virtuous entrepreneur at heart. The queen was an astute negotiator as she conducted trade on lucrative ports whilst simultaneously revolutionizing the fashion of her era by designing new varieties of cotton and silk fabrics. The empress struck coins in her name, thus granting to herself an important aspect of sovereignty; it was an unparalleled act in Mughal history.

CREATIVE VISION

Gouache painting is one of the primary stages in the creation of any Nizaa high jewellery design. Our designers create a sketch of each jewel, in life-size scale, resulting in an artist’s vision of how it will look once the jewel is brought to life.
